And now for the boring stuff...
After tabulating the costs of my dream vacation to Boston, the total comes up quite high however the overall travel expenses are still within a realistic budget for my family. Below I’ve documented approximately how much my parents and I would spend during our trip – all prices are listed in US dollars and excluding hotel and cab fares, were formulated on a per person basis.
Flights
We’ll be travelling to and from Boston on Air Canada – although there were cheaper flights available, my family and I ALWAYS travel with this airline, so in this case comfort and familiarity took precedence over practicality and cost efficiency. After converting these prices into American currency, the total cost of our flights would be $348.15 USD/person.
Accomodations
Because this is a dream vacation, I did decide to splurge when it came to accommodations – the Four Seasons Hotel Boston is one of the most luxurious hotels in the area. Overlooking the city’s skyline, it is within easy reach of many of Boston’s famed attractions so it was an obvious winner when it came to choosing where to stay.
We’ll be calling the Four Seasons our home for 6 nights – my parents and I will rent out an executive suite overlooking Boston’s historic Public Garden. At $910/night with a daily breakfast included, the total cost of our accomodations is approximately $5,460 USD. |
The Boston Marathon
An entry fee of $150 USD/per person is required from all non-US residents wishing to participate in the Boston Marathon. This payment covers several services including transportation, access to all marathon weekend events as well as many other amenities offered on race day. Realistically, I will spend at least an additional $300 USD on marathon souvenirs, race photos and exclusive running gear sold to participants at the race weekend expo.
Remaining Costs
Here I've listed the remaining costs of our vacation ordered based on our travel itinerary:
Shopping in Back Bay - $300 USD/person.
This neighbourhood is chock-full of high-end stores and as a young woman who would major in shopping if she could, I see myself spending at least $300.00 on this particular outing.
Massages at the Four Seasons - $150 USD/person
Our hotel offers a variety of massages performed by registered masseuses - regardless of the price this amenity will be an absolute necessity after our run!
Whale Watching + Sunset Dinner Cruise - $85 USD/person
Our boat tour is pretty reasonably priced considering the high quality of this attraction.
Red Sox Tickets - $115/person
These seats are located in the field box right behind home plate - of course there were cheaper tickets available but if you're going to a Red Sox game at Fenway, you have to go all out!
Samuel Adams Brewery Tour - Free!
Harvard Hoodie - $40 USD
A necessary purchase.

Food and DrinkI've approximated that throughout our week, $400 USD/person will be spent on food and drink. This is obviously a rough estimate as there's no way to accurately predict how much we'll be eating during the vacation but since we are running a marathon, its safe to say most likely a lot! Thankfully breakfast is covered in our hotel costs however my parents and I do enjoy eating out and dining at high quality establishments which would probably run our food expenses pretty high.

Taxi FaresAs previously mentioned, Boston is known as "The Walking City" due to its compact nature, so we probably won't need to travel by cab very often. We will however, need one to commute between the airport to our hotel as well as during our day trip to Harvard so for the week long vacation, I estimate us spending about $150 USD on transportation via taxi.
